Economic sanctions backfire

Economic sanctions mandated by states backfire on the subjects of the states involved, both the states that are the targets of the sanctions and the mandating states. Economic sanctions are - like state action usually -  imposed by the state without regard of the will of its subjects. Even if there were referenda on economic sanctions, a minority would be hurt against its will. Innocent people in all countries involved are hurt by limiting their options. That's why the legitimacy of economic sanctions is suspect. Economic sanctions make the mankind poorer.

Economic sanctions are politics, the extension of which is war as written by Carl von Clausewitz. I am not an extreme pacifist and acknowledge that war may sometimes have been the best option. Economic sanctions could theoretically sometimes be the best option, too, but it is highly dubious.

Economic sanctions are often mandated by huge empires like the USA and the EU, which makes me especially dubious since they are largely insulated from the voice of their subjects.
